Dr. Brian Piehl is a licensed clinical psychologist that specializes in treating anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and interpersonal problems. Dr. Piehl also can help clients experiencing self-harm or suicidal thoughts and feelings. He enjoys working with both adolescents and adults from diverse backgrounds and identities, using a client-centered, empathetic, and collaborative approach. To this end, he believes that using a client’s expertise in their own lived experience in conjunction with his expertise in evidence-based treatments lead to the best outcomes. Dr. Piehl integrates cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness, and interpersonal strategies in his therapeutic approach.
Dr. Piehl graduated Magna Cum Laude from Saint Louis University and earned his Master’s degree in Psychology in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. He earned his Master’s and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The Catholic University of America (CUA). While at CUA, he contributed to the Suicide Prevention Laboratory, where his dissertation examined how suicidal typologies inform psychotherapeutic treatment and outcomes, specifically in people treated with the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS).
Before joining the Metta Psychology Group, Dr. Piehl worked in both outpatient private practice and university counseling center settings. Additionally, he was a research assistant at the New York State Psychiatric Institute at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, helping conduct research on the effectiveness of suicide prevention crisis lines.
Dr. Piehl has advanced training in CBT, DBT, CAMS, and prolonged exposure therapy for PTSD. He prioritizes creating a warm and nonjudgmental space for therapy. Currently, he works with adolescents 15 or older, and adults.
